Information Imperative
Although most managers are awash in data, their biggest challenge is getting the right information to make good decisions. The best data, ironically, often comes from outside traditional management information and accounting systems. The challenge is to identify the right information for your company and figure out how to refresh it regularly.
In today’s world, it is important to seek unconventional sources of information. In his last book, legendary business author Peter Drucker, addresses the need for focus outside the firm:
“…the information you need—the really important information—you cannot truly get from your information system. Your information system gives you inside information. But there are no results inside a business…Profit comes only from the outside.*
In addition to internal/external information, we also recommend a balance between quantitative/qualitative, written/verbal, facts/instincts, management/employees, and customers/prospects. The “right” information will always reflect this kind of balance.
